Please Welcome Shannon McDermott
Shannon McDermott has joined the college as an anatomy and physiology instructor. McDermott brings more than a decade of higher education teaching experience, most recently serving as professor of biology at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg, Virginia. Her previous teaching roles include positions at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, Alamance Community College and Durham Technical Community College, all in North Carolina. McDermott earned a doctorate in genetics and genomics and a certificate in teaching college biology from Duke University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in genetic engineering from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Outside of work, McDermott enjoys traveling with family and hopes to take a family trip to Japan one day. A longtime science enthusiast, McDermott traces an interest in genetics back to watching the original Jurassic Park as a child. McDermott is also a fan of Duke basketball and Syracuse athletics, loves Peanut M&M’s, and recently relocated to the region with a spouse and two young daughters.
