SUNY Niagara Print Initiative Update

Your efforts over the past year made a difference – thank you.

Under the first full year of the SUNY Niagara Print Initiative, we printed about 1.8 million pages, roughly 465,000 fewer than the year below.  For perspective, that is about 1.5 million fewer pages compared to the 2018/19 academic year.

Other highlights:

• Black-and-white printing dropped by more than 517,000 pages, or about 30%
• Print program costs dropped by $10,000, or 14%

Our next opportunity is color printing.

While overall printing went down, color printing went up by 52,000, or 9%.  Roughly one in every three pages printed is in color.  Color pages cost considerably more to produce than black-and-white and employees account for 53% of all color printing.

You can help. 

Our secure print queue is set for duplex printing and grayscale by default.  However, Microsoft and Adobe applications remember the settings from your last print job.  If you switch to color for one document, every document thereafter will print in color until you switch the setting back.

To make grayscale your default again: 

• Microsoft applications: select Print, click on Print Properties, go to the Color tab and check Print in Grayscale.
• Adobe applications: select Print, click on Properties, go to the Color tab and check Print in Grayscale.

If not already done so, set EcoSMART as your default printer.  EcoSMART helps reduce energy usage, toner consumption and paper waste – for example, by automatically printing double-sided (duplex) when appropriate.  OIT created simple, easy-to-follow instructions for setting EcoSMART as your default printer and for using the stapler feature.  These guides are available on the FYI page – select Miscellaneous under the Main Menu.
