More Meta Titles Make for Major Website Enhancement

In the ongoing quest to improve the college’s website, PR recently overhauled the meta titles for the most visited webpages. But what’a a meta title and why does it matter?

A meta title defines a webpage’s clickable, headline-like text. A thoughtful meta title is unique, accurate, and includes relevant keywords. When you Google something, Google accesses meta titles to match results to your query.

That means that meta titles are essential for search engine optimization. You usually won’t notice meta titles, but they’re lurking in the HTML background, helping search engines and users understand pages’ contents. This, in turn, can attract clicks and improve search rankings.

An evaluation of the meta titles of every webpage was not part of the transition from the college’s old site to its new one because that would’ve taken weeks. However over the summer, the office reviewed and updated about 400 webpages’ meta titles to ensure that each clearly communicates its content. This is just one facet of the work that helps keep the site bounce rate low—maybe that’s a topic for a future SUNY Niagara Today item—and deliver a better user experience.
