AI Task Force Lunch & Learn: From Policing and Detection to Authorship

Subject: SUNY Niagara AI Task Force Guidance on AI, Authorship, and Student Work

Dear Colleagues,

As part of our ongoing work through the AI Task Force, we are sharing new guidance to help faculty navigate student use of AI in coursework.
These resources are tailored for assignments that emphasize student-authored work, including papers, written responses, and discussion posts. Focused on practical strategies to help you:

  • Set clear expectations for students
  • Design assignments that promote authentic student work
  • Prepare students to demonstrate authorship and their writing process

Our goal is to shift the conversation from detection and policing toward authorship, transparency, and student learning. Rather than relying solely on AI detection tools, this approach emphasizes assignment design, student preparation, and authorship verification when needed.

To support this work, we created a flexible faculty toolkit that you can easily adapt for your courses, including:

  • AI Use Guidance for Faculty – Assignment Focused
  • A sample authorship rubric (adaptable for your course)
  • Student-facing guidance and infographics
  • Faculty quick-reference materials

All of the resources are located here in our OneDrive folder.

Please join us for a Lunch and Learn session as we explore the shift from policing and detection to authorship. Wednesday, April 29th | FRCAE Large Conference room or Teams| 12 noon -1PM

Thank you for your continued commitment to student learning and academic integrity.

Best regards,

Lisa Dubuc
