CHANGE IN COURSE SECTION CODING
Historically, we have used a combination of characters/numbers in the section coding of courses to designate mod classes, course modalities, evening sections, etc. With a limitation on characters in the section coding, it often becomes challenging to use a 3 character code to designate all of this information on a single course.
An example is:
CIS 105 1WF where the 1 indicates the first mod session, the W is for WEB and the F is for a five week mod. Since we already designate in SSASECT that part of term is 15 and instructional method is WEB, the section coding is not necessary.
In checking with OIT and IR, reports are pulling this information through other methods such as campus code, instructional method, schedule type, part of term, building, room, etc (all fields found in SSASECT). Therefore, section numbering code recommendations of the past have been relied upon less in favor of these other fields found in Banner.
Given that information, we are asking that you ONLY RETAIN the W (web), the Y (hybrid, blend, hyflex, F2FEN), and H (honors) in the section numbers, but it is no longer necessary to use section coding to distinguish courses in any other way.
Web (W), Hybrid (Y), Blend (Y), F2FEN (Y), HYFLX (Y), Honors (H) WILL CONTINUE TO BE IDENTIFIED in the 2nd position of a section
0W1, 0W2, 0Y1, 0Y2, 0H1, 0H2….
We hope that by removing all other section coding recommendations, it will simplify the creation of course sections across divisions. Thank you!
