PR Defines Its Standards of Practice for AI
As the Office of Public Relations gains more experience with artificial intelligence tools, staff members increasingly use them in everyday work. For example, an AI tool created the images above. Another AI tool wrote The possibilities for AI are unknown, and AI’s use at the college is largely at the caprice of individuals.
Because of this, PR wants to maintain a high level of transparency about its practices. The list below discloses the range of activities for which PR uses AI as of today:
Development
- Edit computer code
- Generate computer code
- Troubleshoot technical issues
Imagery

- Optimize photography settings
Inquiry

- Conduct research

This list is elastic. It may grow or shrink as AI tools increase in their variety and ability, and/or as more is understood about the liabilities AI tools may present.
The Office of Public Relations also has adopted several guardrails for ethical and effective AI use. PR does not:
- Delete executed prompts
- Include in prompts information that is proprietary
- Install untested AI-generated computer code in a live environment
- Place AI-drafted copy without human review, except images’ alternative tags for the purpose of meeting accessibility requirements
- Place synthetic performers in final images
